Yearly inspections of your system is recommend by the Halifax Regional Municipality. This inspection is critical to avoid costly repairs. The same experts recommend pumping the tank every 2-5 years. This frequency can change depending on the size of your tank and the wastewater demands your family has.

What can I do to avoid problems with my septic system?

The HRM recommends the following tips to help avoid problems with your system:

  • Spread full laundry loads over the week instead of doing all the laundry in one day.
  • Record the location and keep records of the installation and maintenance of the system.
  • Install a manually cleaned lint trap on your washing machine and use liquid detergent.
  • Prevent large amounts of caustic cleaners, chemicals and solvents from entering the system. Instead, use biodegradable cleaning products.
  • Keep surface water away from the field area or roof drains away from the field.
  • Keep your septic tank accessible and keep heavy objects and equipment away from the field.
  • Maintain a groundcover of grass only on the disposal field to prevent soil erosion. Plant trees and shrubs away from the field.
